Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
This course is designed to be an entry-level introductory to BSA outdoor training. It is not intended as an overnight experience, but as preparation for leaders interested in learning about overnight camping activities.
This is for the new Cub Scout Leader with minimal camping experience who will plan and carry out an entry-level outdoor experience for the pack.
The goal of BALOO is to train leaders so that they can provide a successful pack camping outing that is:
Based on the purposes of Cub Scouting
Successful in whetting an outdoor appetite
The learning objectives of Baloo:
Understanding of the Cub Scout level of the BSA camping program
Acquire skills / confidence
Increase knowledge of resources
Understand BSA requirements for carrying out the activity
The focus of pack camping is NOT advancement but instead should be: Spiritual Growth, Citizenship, Preparing them to become Boy Scouts, Family Understanding, Helpfulness, Getting Along with Others, Personal Achievement, Sportsmanship, Fun & Exciting Things to do.
The course agenda includes sessions on Lunch Preparation, Planning, Equipment, Campfire Planning, a Campfire Demonstration, Health & Safety, Activities, Fire Safety, Stoves and Lanterns, First Aid and Sanitation, Nature Hikes and Games, Cub Scout Cooking.
It is recommended that each pack have a BALOO certified member of the pack leadership. Adults giving leadership to the pack campout must complete BALOO.
